Rates of overbank sedimentation on the flood plains of several British rivers during the past 100 years

چکیده
The flood plains of lowland rivers frequently represent important sinks for suspended sediment transported through the river system. However, little is currently known about rates of overbank deposition by British rivers and, more particularly, whether such rates have increased in recent years in response to land use change. The fallout radionuclides Cs and Pb off ;r considerable potential for estimating flood plain sedimentation rates over the past 30-35 years and 100 years respectively. Caesium-137 and Pb measurements have been employed by the authors to investigate sedimentation rates during the past 100 years at five sites on the flood plains of British rivers. At one site a detailed study of the spatial pattern of deposition within a meander bend was undertaken. The results obtained suggest that no significant changes in sedimentation rates have occurred at these sites during the past 100 years. Further work is, however, required to confirm the general applicability of the findings reported.

Rivers are important water resources for human life, but sometimes cause irreparable damages. The flood plains are fertile terrains which are endangered by flood. Flood hazard mapping is one of the basic methods in flood fighting. In order to decline flood damages, the simulation of the hydraulic behavior of the rivers during flood occurrence is very important. In this study, areas that are flo...

The morphostratigraphy of flood plains along unconfined reaches of the Todd River, central Australia, indicate that flood plain formation is dominated by high magnitude floods. Processes of flood plain destruction include channel widening, vertical stripping, flood channel, back channel and macroturbulent scour. Flood plain construction occurs predominantly during high magnitude floods. Overban...

Development of rural areas in rivers margins and flood plains, without understanding and attention to the dynamical and hydrological conditions and upstream areas of the rivers will cause to increase flood risk and loss of life and financial. Flood zoning has many applications, in floodplain management. For management of the three major branches of the Halilrood River, Rabor, Roodar and Javaran...

This study assesses historic overbank alluvial sedimentation along a low-gradient reach of West Fork Black’s Fork in the northern Uinta Mountains, Utah. In this previously glaciated setting, an alluvial floodplain that is approximately 400 m wide by 1500 m long has been modified by the combined effects of valley morphometry and the recent history of clear-cut logging during the late 19th and ea...
